Melbourne-based indie-rock singer/songwriter and guitarist KIT — aka Katie Wighton of the ARIA Award-winning folk group All Our Exes Live in Texas — will release her debut solo EP on November 13. The 5-track set includes co-writes with fellow Australian up-and-comer Ali Barter, Jake Sinclair (Panic! At The Disco, Taylor Swift, Weezer), and Jenny Owen-Youngs (Panic! At The Disco). It was produced by Dave Symes (Boy and Bear) and James Seymour (Feelds, Merpire) with additional engineering by Simon Berckelman (The Internet) and Liz Drummond (Little May).

KIT recently shared EP standout “You Act Like A Child,” which EARMILK called “a heartfelt exploration of vulnerability wrapped up in bold indie rock goodness.” Of the track, Wighton offered, “I had a particularly hectic argument with a friend and it got me thinking about the things we do and say in the heat of the moment. We act like children sometimes. We throw these fits of rage and then when we’re asked if we’re okay we are too full of pride to say we’re hurting. Or that we’re sorry. And I think that’s dumb. I want us all to do better. Communicate openly. Be wrong. Be sorry. Swallow our pride and our egos and ask for closeness. I think that’s the way you get through to the other side and THAT is where the good stuff is.”

KIT initially teased the forthcoming release with lead single, “Good Guy,” which premiered via NME on April 3. The Guardian praised, “A far cry from the four-part folk of [All Our Exes], this is a chugging rocker reminiscent of PJ Harvey or perhaps Ali Barter, who co-wrote it and provides the warm harmonies...Hopefully an album is on the way.” The track was followed by “King Size Bed,” which landed on Spotify’s Indie Fuzz playlist and is currently seeing radio success in Australia via Triple J Unearthed and Double J. Wighton recently performed some of the new songs for Rolling Stone Australia who calls the EP “a masterclass of exceptional songwriting and stunning instrumentation.”

Recorded at Golden Retriever Studios and Small Time Studios, as well as various people’s bedrooms, lounge rooms, and homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these new songs use fuzzy guitar riffs and catchy melodies to highlight the impressive vocals that Wighton brought to All Our Exes’ widely acclaimed harmonies. She playfully describes the set as “kind of a series of mini tantrums. Each song is basically a little snapshot of me saying I’ve had ENOUGH of whatever emotion I was feeling.” A sentiment we can all relate to these days.
